#2695 THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE INTERNATIONALLY: RESULTS OF A LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT

چکیده
Abstract Background and Aims The environmental impact of healthcare is high, kidney care for chronic disease (CKD) contributes significantly to this. Haemodialysis represents the only viable replacement option certain patients with CKD, in whom clinical benefits are lifesaving. also resource-intensive, requiring frequent sessions, energy- water-intensive equipment. In recognition this, ERA has implemented a green nephrology initiative aiming minimize care. However, there paucity up-to-date analysis on different dialysis techniques CKD overall. This study presents an international, holistic life cycle assessment (LCA) adults at all stages. Method LCA methodology was used, conducted according ISO 14040/14044 international standards, estimate annual impacts each stage (1–5) per patient. At Stage 5, supportive care, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, transplantation pathways were considered. A literature review performed identify studies reporting resource use stratified by stage. boundary summarised Figure 1. GaBi software used model pathway based ecoinvent Life Cycle Inventory database version 3.8. Environmental categories reported methods, ReCiPE 2016 v1.1 TRACI 2.1 (US only). Here, we describe preliminary study, presenting results in-centre haemodialysis UK, one patient receiving three times weekly four hours session. inputs comprised consumables their transport, energy/water machine (including reverse osmosis), heating/cooling/lighting area, waste disposal, transport. Results total 93,600 litres water 3,058 kWh electricity estimated annually UK. carbon footprint UK be 3,900 kg CO2 equivalents, comparable average persons greenhouse gas footprint, effectively doubling yearly impact. Several other measured beyond including photochemical oxidation potential (ground-level ozone formation) fine particulate matter, as PM2.5. Across category, parameters that drove differed (Figure 2). For example, consumables, machine, transport main contributors while driver terrestrial ecotoxicity. Conclusion this build upon previous published research demonstrate high line studies. show goes its important aspects such PM2.5 emissions, which long-term exposure associated health problems, cardiovascular respiratory diseases, increased risk CKD. hopes highlight need evidence-based policy interventions around implementation initiatives renewable energy power utilisation conserving osmosis systems, reduction waste. Furthermore, could help detect early stages thereby enable them managed proactively eventually reduce resource-intensive therapy.
